Bertha V. Dilley , a longtime St. Johnsbury resident passed away, Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at her residence. She was a daughter of the late John F. And Mary E. (Cook) Vance. She was born Sept. 16, 1908, in Ryegate, Vt. Bertha attended graded school in Ryegate and Mosquitoville and graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy class of 1928. She graduated nursing school at Brightlook Hospital in 1934. She spent seven months at a nursing school in Jersey City, N.J., where she received her RN. Bertha began working at Brightlook Hospital in 1935. She later became the town nurse and eventually worked for Caledonia Home Health, retiring in 1976. During this time, she met and married William George Dilley on Oct. 14, 1937. He predeceased her in July 1979. For Bertha, nursing became the joy of her life as she comforted and helped many during her years of service. She also enjoyed antiques, camping, and wintering in Florida. She was a member of the Diamond Chapter 14 of the Eastern Star in Danville. Bertha is survived by two sons, Alfred Dilley, and wife Elaine of Lyndon Center, and David Dilley, and wife Chris of Ocala, Fla.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son Raymond Dilley in April 2007; three brothers, James, John, Charles; two sisters, Florence Grady and Maude Stewart. A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 28, at the Pearsons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jay Sprout, officiant. Interment will be Tuesday, 11 a.m., in the Lyndon Center Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday one hour prior to services. Memorial contributions may be made in Bertha's name to the Caledonia Home Health & Hospice, at P.O. Box 383, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819.
