Mrs. Dorothy (Conly) Cutting of Lafayette Street in St. Johnsbury passed away at home Sunday, March 16, 2014, at the age of 102. She was born Nov. 17, 1911, in West Danville, Vt., the first of eight children born to John Edward and Edna (Armstrong) Conly; her siblings were George Conly, Raymond Conly, Ralph Conly, Ruth Conly (deceased at 6 years old), Eleanor Conly Gonyaw, and Marion Conly Stanyon, and Donald Conly (the youngest and still living in Oregon). She was married to Col. William B. Cutting who predeceased her 1993. They made their home in St. Johnsbury and had three daughters. Their oldest daughter, Priscilla Mayo, passed away on June 29, 2012. Daughters Virginia Cross (husband Ron), Barbara Thurston (husband Ernie) live in St. Johnsbury and survive her as does her son-in-law Michael Mayo of Waterford. She is also survived by six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren: Tara Gibson and daughter Greta; Chris Mayo, wife June and their children Natalie and Remi; Janet Parent, husband Kevin and their children Adrienne and Michael; Karen Mayo Marsh, husband Jeff and their children Ava and Poppy; Jay Leonard, wife Caitlin and their son Corbin; and Julie Leonard; nieces and nephews. Dot graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy as valedictorian of her class. She worked as secretary to the district engineer at the Vermont Highway Department for 25 years. After retirement the Cuttings traveled to Europe several times. They spent their winters in Florida and much of the summer at the camp on Joes Pond. Dot was independent until well into her nineties. It was hard for her, at the age of 95, to give up driving. It's an understatement to say Dot was a strong woman. She was a true conservative; she wasn't just a Republican; she was a registered Republican! She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, enjoyed gardening, sewing, traveling, and especially reading. But most of all she loved and cared for her family. Visiting hours will be held at the Sayles Funeral Home this Thursday, March 20, from 6-8 p.m. Her family will observe her burial privately this spring at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
