SMYTHE: Ruby W. (Wheaton) , 94, longtime resident of West Cottage Street in St. Johnsbury, died Sunday morning, Feb. 10, 2002, at the Canterbury Inn, where she had resided for the past three years. She was born in St. Johnsbury, April 27, 1907, one of six daughters born to Charles and Nancy (McCaig) Wheaton. She graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1925. Her husband, Louis N. Smythe, predeceased her Oct. 14, 1986. Up until her health failed, Ruby was an active member at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and served on the altar guild. Both she and her husband fulfilled many essential duties by working on anything and everything that needed doing in the church. She was a longtime bookkeeper for the St. Johnsbury Gas Company. She is survived by two sisters, Charlotte Wheaton of Laguna Woods, Calif., and Helen Desrochers of St. Johnsbury; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters, Marion Miller in 1975, Doris Moore in 1979, and Martha Gallagher in 1997. Funeral services will be announced in late May or early June and will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in St. Johnsbury. Burial will follow at Passumpsic Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Canterbury Inn, 46 Cherry St., St. Johnsbury, VT 05819, where she received such special care.
