Edith V. Easter , 97, of Concord, Vt., died Sunday morning, May 4, 2008, at St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center. Edith was born in Derby on Feb. 10, 1911, the daughter of Simon Charles and Inez (Brown) Shastany. Upon the death of her mother on April 26, 1911, she lived with her "parents," Eugene and Emma Shastany of East St. Johnsbury where she attended East Village School and then St. Johnsbury Academy. On April 22, 1929, she married Floyd Easter and they resided in St. Johnsbury. Edith was a devoted mother to her children and loved to tell tales of their childhood adventures. She and Floyd were very involved in horse shows and races and spent many weekends showing their horses. Edith worked at the Green Mountain Market and Shop and Save for many years. She was a member of the V.F.W., and she also belonged to the Ladies of the Moose. Edith particularly enjoyed old cars and was a member of the Caledonia Classic Car Club. She loved cruising in her '72 Plymouth Duster. For the past several summers she could be seen driving all around town in her red Dodge convertible. Everyone in her family and large circle of friends will greatly miss her and remember her "spunkiness" and determination. Edith was predeceased by her husband, Floyd, and sons James and Paul and her grandson Jeffrey. She leaves behind her children Eugene Easter and his wife Brenda of Winter Haven, Fla., Lionel (Skip) Easter and his wife Carol of Victory, Rodney Easter and his wife Jean of East Haven, Donald Easter and his wife Bonnie of Barnet, Roxann Stacy (Easter) and her husband A.J. of Sherrills Ford, N.C., Doug Easter and his partner Hilde Sparrow of East Burke, and Robert Desilet and his partner Rita Bourcier of East Hartford, Conn. She also leaves behind grandchildren Richard, Deborah, Steven, James, Cathy, Shelly, Duane, Lynn, Roddy, Dale, Paul Jr., Carol, Susan, Lori, Adam, Sarah, Joshua, Kenny, Dennis and Joey and her great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be held at the Sayles Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, from 5 to 8 p.m. Graveside services will take place on Monday, June 16, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Grove Cemetery in East St. Johnsbury. In lieu of flowers contributions in Edith's memory may be made to the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center Activities Fund at 1248 Hospital Drive, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819.
