Edward Roger Miller , 86, Morrisville, Vt., passed away Monday, Oct. 10, 2005, at his home. Roger was born in Johnson on Nov. 30, 1918, the son of Edward R. and Gladys Etta (Waters) Miller. After attending elementary school in Johnson, Roger graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1937 and went on to complete his education at Baypath Institute in Springfield, Mass. Employed by the Vermont State Highway Department Survey Section, Roger enlisted in the regular Army in 1941, and served for 10 years, with the Air Transport Command and the 101st Airborne with tours of duty that included the American, Asiatic and European theaters during World War II. He again served his country, answering a call to duty during the Korean Conflict. Roger married Marjorie M. Stevens of St. Johnsbury in 1942 and they had two children. Roger entered the insurance business in 1954, and was president of S R Miller and Son Inc. of Johnson, Vt., for 42 years. Roger also held a directorship at the Sterling Trust Company (now Merchants Bank) of Johnson and was a former trustee of Copley Hospital of Morrisville. Roger was a member of VFW Post 9653 Morrisville and had just received his 60-year membership pin from Mount Vernon Lodge 8, F & AM. Throughout his active life, Roger pursued varied interests such as training and showing Morgan horses, skiing with his family, boating and golfing. In his later years, Roger became a prolific master craftsman, sharing his work with many friends and family throughout Vermont. He was a true artist of his craft. He is survived by his beloved partner of 28 years, Kathleen Ann Lanman of Morrisville; her son, Jordan of Burlington; Marjorie Miller of South Burlington; his children, Jeffrey and Brenda Miller of Hyde Park and Janice Sawtell of South Burlington; his grandchildren, Ian and Robbin Miller of Johnson, Christi and Dan Dussault of Hyde Park, Andrew Sawtell of South Burlington and Erin and Aaron Phelan of Milton, five great-grandchildren, Tully and Marcail Miller, Remy and Brie Dussault and Maya Phelan; and his beloved dog, Sam. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Miller Foss, in 2005. At Roger's request, there will be no services. Burial will be in the Lamoille View Cemetery, Johnson, at the convenience of his family. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Roger's memory would be appreciated to the Frontier Animal Society, 4473 Barton-Orleans Road, Orleans, VT 05860.
