Eleanor Rattigan Courteau , the widow of Arthur J. Courteau and formerly of Emerson Street in St. Johnsbury, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, at Uihlein Mercy Center, Lake Placid, N.Y. She had resided for the past year and a half with her daughter, Kathleen Conlon, in Lake Placid. She was born in St. Johnsbury on Oct. 25, 1915. She was predeceased by her parents Fred and Myrtle (Maxwell) Rattigan, her brother Charles Rattigan, her sister Frances and husband Howard Willard, and her son-in-law Ed Conlon. Eleanor graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1933 and Brightlook School of Nursing in 1936 where she worked 1937-1940. She worked as a registered nurse at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Conn., from 1956-1979. She and Arthur came back to live in St. Johnsbury in 1984. Eleanor was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, the St. Johnsbury Women's Club, and the Onamo Club. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Roche and husband Kenneth of Old Saybrook, Conn., and Kathleen Conlon of Lake Placid, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Colello and husband Peter of Clayton, N.Y., Brian Roche and wife Bridie of North Bridgton, Maine, Timothy Conlon of Denver, Colo., Peter Roche and wife Ayako of West Hartford, Conn., Mary Lolar and husband Carl of South Portland, Maine; five great-grandchildren, Serena Rose Roche, Charlotte Eleanor Colello, Beatrice Margaret Colello, Vivian Rain Lolar, Ken Ronan Roche; sister-in-law Marion Rattigan of Peoria, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be held in St. Johnsbury Monday, Jan. 26, at 1 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. Committal services will be held in the springtime at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visiting hours will held at the funeral home Monday 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. John the Evangelist Church, 49 Winter St., St. Johnsbury VT 05819.
