Marion L. Reed, longtime Summer St. resident of St. Johnsbury, passed away at home Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, with her loving family at her side. She was born May 26, 1918, in St. Johnsbury to Herbert James Lumbra and Vera (Cole) Lumbra. Her husband, Carlyle M. Reed, passed away on July 16, 2003, after 64 years of marriage. Their youngest child Robert passed away Dec. 14, 1976. She was also predeceased by four brothers, Bruce, Robert, Paul and Calvin Lumbra, and by a sister, Donna Whitcomb. Marion had a love of music; she played the piano and sang in the North Church choir for many years. She was very active in the North Church's United Workers group. She enjoyed all sports and especially watching the Boston Red Sox; she was thrilled to see them win two world championships. Marion enjoyed working outside in her vegetable and flower gardens, and she had a gift for drawing and water-color painting. She also enjoyed bird-watching and taking rides looking for wildlife. For over 30 years she and Carlyle spent their winters in St. Petersburg, Fla. But her greatest love always was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; in fact, Sharon and Brad grew up in the same house. She is survived by her only remaining sibling, her sister Barbara Schmidt and husband Robert of San Diego, Calif.; her two children, Richard Reed and wife Patricia of St. Johnsbury, Barbara Truex and husband Thomas of Wallingford, Vt.; three grandchildren who called her their "Nan," Betsy Brown and husband Chris of Monkton, Vt., Sharon Alger and husband Jay of St. Johnsbury, Bradley Reed and wife Linda of St. Johnsbury; two great-grandchildren, Alyssa Alger and Alison Brown; four step-grandchildren, Linda's children Michael and Katie, and Tom's children Sam and Jacqui; and Jacqui's two children, Nathaniel and Seth; two sisters-in-law, Theresa Lumbra and Frances Lumbra, both of St. Johnsbury; brother-in-law David Whitcomb of Lyndonville; Carlyle's brother Paul Reed and wife Marjorie of Lyndonville; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held in Danville this Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Danville Congregational Church. The pastor, the Rev. Douglas Carter, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Robert Sargent. Burial will be at a later date at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in St. Johnsbury. There will be no visiting hours.
