Mildred Fay Conly Adams , long time resident of East St. Johnsbury, passed away peacefully at age 96 at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehabilitation Center on Saturday, Nov. 27. Known by Mid or MeMe to family and Millie to her friends, she was born in St. Johnsbury on March 14, 1914, to Herbert William and Glenn (Tisdale) Conly. Millie had a keen memory and always enjoyed visiting and reminiscing. She very much enjoyed her childhood and would often recount stories of her antics while growing up on the Farm "Sheltered Gables" on Higgins Hill and at the family camp on Miles Pond. Millie attended schools in St. Johnsbury and graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1932. Millie met the love of her life, Morris Adams, in 1938 and they were married in 1939. After spending several years in Maine, they returned to St. Johnsbury and eventually bought a small house next to Millie's parents in East Village. They enjoyed fishing together and spent many enjoyable days on the lakes and streams of both Maine and Vermont. While they never had children, there was scarcely a day that went by without one of the "kids" making an appearance at "MeMe's House." She loved them all and was like a second mother. She will be long remembered for the costumes she made for "the kids" for Old Home Day in the Village, and the birthday cakes which were simply amazing! She was well known among family members for her handmade Christmas decorations and gifts. MeMe was also a very accomplished seamstress and made dolls for all the young girls in the family. For many years Millie worked at Glover's, manufacturing ladies' fine gloves and later preparing meals at Aime's Restaurant. Millie loved spending time with her extended family and friends and could be counted on to rescue everything from stranded boaters to the smallest of God's creatures. Her love of nature inspired both young and old. All who knew Millie will remember her for the kindness and compassion she showed everyone, for her zest for life, and for her smile and the twinkle in her eye. Millie is survived by several nieces and nephews: Bruce Benoit and his wife Janet (Drown) of East St. Johnsbury, Herbert Benoit and his wife Phyllis (Pigula) of Concord, N.H., Brenda (Benoit) and her husband Frank Giordano of New Jersey, Susan (Benoit) and her husband Gene Horn of Virginia, Herbert Conly and his wife Ginger (Brewer) of Jericho, Vt., Craig Conly of Sebastopol, Calif., Brent Conly of Placerville, Calif., Tanya Conly of East St. Johnsbury, George Conly and his wife Ruth (Porter) of Cape Elizabeth and Sweden, Maine, and Douglas Conly and his wife Patricia (Houghton) of Lyndonville. She is also survived by numerous great nieces and nephews. Besides Morris, Millie was predeceased by her sister Harriett Conly Benoit Johnson, her brother William "Bill" Herbert Conly and recently by her brother Douglas Conly. Visiting hours will be noon to 1 p.m. at the Sayles Funeral Home on Tuesday, Nov. 30, and will be immediately followed by a short prayer service at the same address and interment at the Pine Grove Cemetery in East St. Johnsbury.
