Rhoda Spaulding , 87, of 21 Ledges Drive, Laconia, N.H., died on Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, at the Lakes Region General Hospital. Mrs. Spaulding was born Nov. 16, 1921, in Concord, Mass., the daughter of Rollo Hale Brown and Freda (Sibley) Brown. While growing up, she lived in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont with her parents. Mrs. Spaulding came to Laconia in 1938 with her parents and two brothers from St. Johnsbury, Vt., where she attended St. Johnsbury Academy for three years. Then being a resident of Laconia, she was a 1939 graduate of Laconia High School. Following graduation, she worked at the F. W. Woolworth Store, the Colonial Theater and Scott & Williams. In 1945, she joined the U. S. Women's Army Air Corps (WAAC). She received basic training at Des Moines, Iowa and Orlando, Fla. In April, 1946, she was married to Thorne E. Spaulding at East Burke, Vt. They resided in St. Johnsbury until moving to Beloit, Wis., in 1959. They came to Sanbornton, N.H., in 1975. In 1978, they bought a four-acre lot in Sanbornton, had a house built there and lived there for 10 years. In 1988, they moved to the Ledges in the Taylor Community. In her life time, she had visited 48 States, 20 of them for short periods of time. Her interests were genealogy, gardening, sewing, knitting and jigsaw puzzles. Mrs. Spaulding is survived by her husband of 62 years, Thorne E. Spaulding, of Laconia; a brother, Howard H. Brown, of Belmont, Mass.; four nieces, Brenda Lee Brown of Weirs Beach, N.H., Pamela B. Meehan of Arlington, Mass., Susan B. Russell of Henderson, Nev., and Toby J. Wright of Plantation, Fla.; two nephews, Curtis C. Brown of Draper, Va., and Jeffery V. Brown of Port Saint Lucie, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Vernon Brown, of Fort Pierce, Fla. She was predeceased by her mother who died in 1957; her father in 1980; and younger brother in 2002. According to Mrs. Spaulding's wishes, calling hours and funeral service will be private. Burial will be in the family lot in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, St. Johnsbury.
