Walter A. Ladd Sr. of St. Johnsbury passed away Monday evening, March 12, 2012, at the age of 96. He was born in St. Johnsbury on Dec. 31, 1915, the son of Aldis and Blanche (Heywood) Ladd. His wife, Nellie (Mosher) Ladd, passed away in the year 2000. Walter graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1933 and remained fond of the Academy all his life. He served in the Army during WWII. Walter retired from Fairbanks after 37 years of service. He and Nellie were one of the founding members of the current farmer's market in St. Johnsbury and remained active in the farmer's market until 2000. He was a member of Green Mountain Grange and Odd Fellows Lodge #9. Besides Nellie, he was predeceased by a son Dennis in 1974, a daughter Janet Nickerson in 2003; three sisters Wilma Halpin, Mildred Lucas and Gertrude Ladd; and a brother Harold Lyons. He is survived by two sons: Walter Ladd Jr. and wife Kathy of Turner Maine, Gordon Ladd and wife Barbara of Woodstock, Vt.; eight grandchildren: Janet's children Christine, Michael, Laurie and Debbie; Walter Jr.'s children Mark and JoAnne; Gordon's children Jason and Kelly; 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; one sister Barbara Matthews of Waterford; one brother Paul Lyons and wife Sandy of Waterford; nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held at the Sayles Funeral Home this Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home this Friday at 2 p.m. The Rev. Jay Sprout will officiate.
