WARNER NH - Barbara J. Annis of Warner, NH, passed away quietly and peacefully surrounded by her loving family on August 1, 2018, following a nearly year-long, valiant battle with metastatic pancreatic cancer. She was 87. Born in Manchester, NH, the daughter of Charles and Beulah (Slack) George, Barbara grew up in New Hampshire and Vermont. She was a graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy (VT) in 1948 and received her RN from Mary Hitchcock School of Nursing in Hanover, NH, in 1951. Prior to moving to Warner in 1966, Barbara had lived in Boston, MA, Dallas and San Antonio, TX, Norfolk, VA, and Contoocook, NH. As an RN, she was employed by Massachusetts General Hospital, the New England Medical Center, Children's Hospital (Dallas, TX), San Antonio Visiting Nurse Association, and Concord (NH) Hospital. After leaving her nursing career, Barbara was employed at NH Savings Bank. She married her husband of 45 years, William Annis, in 1966, and they moved to Warner where they ran a greenhouse and nursery, Hidden Acres Farm, for many years. She then spent numerous years working for the Town of Warner in various capacities: Secretary for the Board of Selectmen (1966-1976), Tax Collector (1966-1977), and Administrative Assistant (1976-1990). Giving back to her community was of paramount interest to Barbara. Her name was included in every Town Report of Warner, NH, during her 52-year residency. She served on the Budget Committee (including as Chair) for six years and as Auditor for the Warner Village Fire District (1990). She had been a member of the Planning Board since 1990 until her passing, serving as Chairperson from 2003-2010, and received the Citizen Planner of the Year award from the NH Planners Association in 2017. In addition to serving the town, Barbara was the treasurer for the Warner PTO, assistant treasurer for the Warner Fall Foliage Festival (3 years), on the board of directors for The Kearsarge Theater Company (2 years), and a member of the Kearsarge Trail Snails snowmobile club. She was the first recipient of the Masonic Award for Citizen of the Year (Warner, NH). Barbara was passionate about working with youth and did so as a 4-H leader/volunteer in Merrimack County and at the state level for 51 years. During this time, she touched the lives of innumerable 4-H members, parents, leaders, and staff. She was particularly active with the 4-H horse project, serving as the secretary for the Merrimack County 4-H Qualifying Horse show, Superintendent for the Hopkinton State Fair 4-H Horse Show, a judge for Demonstration Day, and coach for the Merrimack County Jr. and Sr. Quiz Bowl teams. Additionally, Barbara became a familiar face as the secretary of the NH State Horse Show for 31 years, coach of the NH State Quiz Bowl team for 11 years, and chaperone for the NH delegation of 4-H horse exhibitors to the Eastern States Exposition for 15 years. She spent recent years serving as the Chairman for the Merrimack County 4-H Horse Leaders. Her voice will be missed at future horse shows as she often volunteered as a horse show announcer. Barbara was devoted to her family and was predeceased by her husband, William (Bill), and a brother, Bruce C. George. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Barry of Stratham, NH, daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Thomas Lincoln of Worcester, MA, grandson, Matthew Smith and his fiance, Jessica Nichols of Dover, NH, granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Erica and Stephen Black of Newport, NH, a sister-in-law, a great-niece, and several cousins. Barbara's family wishes to extend sincere thanks to the Oncology Department at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, the Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice House (Concord, NH) for the outstanding, compassionate care Mom/Mimi received while confronting her cancer. In lieu of flowers, Barbara requested that donations be made to the NH 4-H Horse Foundation, c/o Jim Doyle, 4-H Foundation of NH, Taylor Hall, 59 College Rd., Durham, NH 03824 or the Merrimack County 4-H Horse Leaders, c/o Merrimack County Extension Office, 315 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen, NH 03303. SERVICES: Friends are invited to visit with family at the Warner Town Hall, 5 East Main St., Warner, NH, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, August 10.
