BARRE - Gilbert "Gilly" Laferriere, 90, of Summer Street, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2014, at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin surrounded by his family and friends. Born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, on Dec. 18, 1923, he was the son of the late Joseph and Marie (Thibeault) Laferriere. Gilly attended schools in St. Johnsbury and was a graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy. After his schooling, he served his country in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged on Sept. 11, 1943. After the service he returned to St. Johnsbury, where he was employed for L.C. Goss Dairy. He also worked for many years as an auctioneer after receiving his diploma from auctioneers school in Indiana. He was a licensed plumber for many years and was superintendent of maintenance at Goddard College until his retirement in 1986. On Sept. 6, 1948, he married Virginia Baird in St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Lyndonville, Vermont. They first made their home in West Burke before moving to Barre in 1951, where they resided and raised their family. Gilly loved the outdoors but especially his camp at Harveys Lake in West Barnet, where he enjoyed fishing, entertaining and spending precious time with his family and friends. He always enjoyed the annual Fourth of July celebrations at camp. He loved watching hockey and his Montreal Canadiens. When he was younger, he played for the Barre Black Hawks traveling around northern New England. He was also a member of the Canadian Club, American Legion and Barre Elks. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Virginia; one son, Bill, and his wife, Deb, of Barre; one daughter-in-law, Claire, of Hyde Park, New York; three grandsons, Ryan, Cory and Kyle, and their spouses; one granddaughter, Anna; and two great-granddaughters, Madeline and Piper. He is also survived by one sister, Lucille McCaffrey, as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by 13 siblings; one son, Ronald Laferriere; and one grandson, Jason Laferriere. A Mass of Christian burial and celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. in St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre. Family and friends may call at the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home in Barre on Monday, Sept. 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. Extra parking is available in St. Monica's parking lot. Burial will follow the Mass at Hope Cemetery in Barre.
