Rev. Edward J. Hart , 82, died on July 6, 2010, following a long illness. He was born on December 19, 1927, in St. Johnsbury, Vt., the son of Edward and Jeanne (Asselin) Hart. Father Hart attended St. Thomas Seminary, Bloomfield, Conn., and St. Augustine Seminary in Toronto, Canada. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 4, 1955 by Bishop Edward F. Ryan at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Burlington, Vt. His priestly ministry began at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Rutland (1955-1959). He also served at St. Mary Parish, St. Albans (1959-1961). He then served as a chaplain in the United States Army from 1961 to 1971, and was awarded two bronze stars for service in Vietnam. Following his chaplaincy service, he continued his priestly ministry in Vermont at St. Anthony Parish, Bethel (1971-1972). His first pastorate was at St. Theresa Parish, Gilman (1972-1979). He also served at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Rutland (1979-1982), St. Augustine Parish, Montpelier (1982-1984), St. John the Evangelist Parish, St. Johnsbury (1985-1986), and St. Lawrence Parish, Essex Junction (1986-1987). He then served with the Glenmary Missionaries in parishes in Texas and Mississippi from 1988 to 1992. He was granted Senior Priest Status in 1992, but continued to assist in parishes and provided priestly ministry at St. Joseph Home in Burlington, until 2005. He is survived by a sister, Mary Servin of South Pasadena, Calif., and her family. Calling hours will be on Sunday, July 11, 2010, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the LaVigne Funeral Home, 132 Main St., Winooski, Vt. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 12, 2010, at noon at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception with Bishop Salvatore R. Matano as principal celebrant. Homilist will be Rev. Roger Charbonneau. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, St. Johnsbury, Vt., following the Funeral Liturgy.
