Ashley "Hap" LaPoint passed away at his home in St. Johnsbury on Nov. 28, 2011, at the age of 75. He was born in St. Johnsbury on Jan. 11, 1936, the son of Arthur and Edith (Hutchinson) LaPoint. He graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1955. Shortly after graduation he enlisted in the United States Army. After being discharged he went on to pursue his career in the bakery industry. He worked for Tip-Top Bakery in St. Johnsbury for 21 years, and then later for Koffee Kup Bakery for 14 years. Hap was a member of the Grace Methodist Church in St. Johnsbury. He enjoyed camping in Island Pond with his family, and also enjoyed the companionship of his dog Sparky. In the last months of his life Hap enjoyed going to Darling Inn meal site and visiting with the people there. Hap is survived by a daughter, Lori (LaPoint) Fleurie and her husband Mike of St. Johnsbury; a son, Fred LaPoint and his wife Deborah of Maine; a brother, Arthur LaPoint and his wife Ellie of Tennessee; six grandchildren: Jodi, Kevin, Nathan, Danika, Katelyn, and Brandon; two great-grandchildren, Myles and Heidi; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Carol (Downs), a sister, Joyce (LaPoint) Guy, a brother-in-law, George Guy, and by a nephew, John LaPoint. Hap will be missed by his family and all who knew him. A gathering of friends and family will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sayles Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend. Memorial contributions may be made in Hap's name to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center: Amy Schrom, Office of Development, Hinman 7070, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Norris Cotton Cancer Center, One Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, NH 03756-0001, and also to a local animal shelter of one's choice.
