Walter H. Whitcomb passed away Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Center at the age of 69. Born in Wolcott on Oct. 27, 1939, Walter graduated from St. Johnsbury Trade School in 1957. He spent most of his years working and living in Connecticut (1961-1972) and North Carolina (1972-2005) where he retired from Klopmann Mills in Ramseur. He returned to St. Johnsbury three years ago to be near family. A big all-around sports fan, no one was a bigger Boston Red Sox fan than Walter. He is survived by his mother Mrs. Myrle Leithead and husband Robert of St. Johnsbury; six children, Roxanne Truhart of East Concord, Deborah Whitcomb of Branford, Conn., Sandra Kennedy of Stark, N.H., Maureen Garrison and husband Robert of DeSoto Mo., Jeff Whitcomb of Concord, Michael Whitcomb of Goldston N.C.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Janet Fenoff of St. Johnsbury, Jean Peck of Ft. Orange, Fla., Judy Ann Lamont and husband Frank of Holly Hills, Fla.; three brothers Bernard Whitcomb of Sacramento, Calif., Richard Whitcomb of Derby, Gary Leithead and wife Bonnie of Lyndonville; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a grandson Patrick Garrison, two nephews Rance Peck and Chad Lumbra; sister-in-law Barbara Whitcomb, and brother-in-law Charles "Bob" Fenoff. The family would like to acknowledge the loving care extended to Walter by Dr. Mary Ready, the nurses and staff at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Center during his courageous fight with cancer. Funeral services will be held at the Sayles Funeral Home this Thursday, Jan. 22, at 11 a.m., with burial in the spring at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. The Rev. Robert H. Sargent will officiate. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. Memorial contributions, payable to Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital, may be sent to Norris Cotton Cancer Center North, PO Box 905, St. Johnsbury VT 05819.
