D. Richard Mauery, Jr. ("Rick") passed into eternal life on March 23, 2021 at his home in Palm Springs, CA after a long illness. Born in 1952 in Nashville, TN, Rick grew up across America as the family often relocated due to his father's successful career with Ralston Purina. In addition to Nashville, Rick's childhood homes included Memphis, TN; Shreveport, LA; Muskogee, OK; St. Johnsbury, VT, Stockton, CA and Overland Park, KS. His cross-country upbringing gave him a view into all sorts of cultures as well as the ability to make friends easily. It was often said that Rick never met a stranger. Upon graduating from the University of Pacific, Rick earned a master's degree in Foreign Policy from Georgetown University. After graduation, Rick remained in Washington DC and enjoyed a successful career as an economist with the Department of Commerce. In the middle of his career years, Rick discovered a passion for Public Health Policy through his community advocacy efforts. This inspired him to earn a master's degree in Public Health from George Washington University. Rick remained at the University for several years, serving its School of Public Health as a teacher, senior researcher, and journal editor - with a focus on women's health issues. Rick was also involved in the DC community - serving on the Boards of St. James Episcopal church and the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop. He also sang with the Washington Men's Camerata and the Lesbian and Gay Chorus of Washington. His community involvement continued during his retirement in Palm Springs and included singing with The Palm Springs Gay Men's Chorus, the Choir at St. Paul in the Desert, as well as volunteering at Desert Regional Medical Center. He was also an avid bowler and a proud member of the Gutter Snipes. Rick will always be remembered for his fervent advocacy for others, his quick wit, his style, his musical talent, his intellect and his love of friends and family. He leaves his brothers Tim (Sally), John (Mandy), his nieces and nephews, Shawn (Jena), Jason, Grace, Kathryn, Caroline, his grand-nephew Parker, several cousins, and many, many friends, including his close friend Gerry Williamson. He is preceded in death by his parents (Kay and Don) and his partner, Marshall
