Arlene Willey, 93, of Williston, Vt., went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, June 26, 2012. She was born Sept. 4, 1918, in West Burke, Vt., the daughter of Bertrand and Ethel (Chesley) Twombly. Arlene attended school in West Burke and graduated as valedictorian from Lyndon Institute and from Lyndon State College. Arlene taught at one-room schoolhouses in the Burke area. After moving to New York, she worked in a defense plant during World War II and as a switchboard operator in a professional building. She married Chester Willey on July 16, 1945 in Morrisville, Vt. They moved back to Vermont after the war and she helped him on the farm and in his carpentry business. Most important to Arlene were church and family. She was very active in church, playing organ and piano, teaching Sunday School and serving on various committees. Arlene loved music, nature, travel, reading, embroidery, gardening, picnics, and family gatherings and was a talented seamstress and musician. She was a wonderful, loving mom and devoted wife. Survivors include her children, Judy Barrows of Williston; Betty Rogers and husband, Alan of Westford; David Willey and wife, Linda of Worcester and Nancy Miller and husband, Roger of Underhill; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Steven, Karen, Seth, Jennifer, Adam, and Sarah; nine great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Chester; brothers, Ardyce and Fordyce Twombly and an infant son, Richard. Arlene's family wishes to sincerely thank Dr. Diane Rippa for her wonderful care. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 2, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Church of Underhill, where she was a member. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until 1:20 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow in the Greensboro Cemetery. White-Fiess Funeral Home of Morrisville is in charge of arrangements.
