Reta was born on August 10, 1926, the daughter of Harvey and Sadie (Paris) Chamberlain in Lyndonville, VT. Reta attended grade school in Lyndonville and then went on to graduate from Lyndon Institute in 1944. Reta greatly enjoyed singing in the Glee Club during all four of her high school years. She also attended and was baptized at St. Peter's Episcopal Mission in her youth and she also enjoyed singing in the choir for many years. Reta lived for a while in Essex Jct., VT and moved to Boston where she worked for the H.E. Harris Company stamp business as a philatelist for several years. Achieving a higher education was a very important goal to Reta and while working she also attended evening classes at Boston University. She later worked for the President of Harvard University as his personal secretary. One day she noticed an ad in the newspaper for help wanted in Washington DC and she decided this was where she wanted to be! So- she went to Washington, DC. Reta proudly worked for the Central Intelligence Agency for 10 plus years and during this period of time, met her future husband, John W. Mulholland. They were married on November 18, 1954 in Arlington, Virginia. John was a generous and wonderful man and they shared many happy years together. John was employed as the union negotiator for all federal employees employed by the United States. They loved to tent on the many beaches from Cape Hatteras to the Chesapeake Bay, eating clams and hunting and fishing. It was Reta who taught John all about hunting and fishing! During her retirement years, Reta took great pride and interest in pursuing night classes in Annapolis, Maryland studying veterinary medicine relative to felines and dogs. Reta also enjoyed her volunteer work with the Girl Scouts and was known for her love of her cats, horses, singing, flowers and cooking. Reta and John lived happily together in Edgewater, Maryland for many years. Reta took great pleasure in singing in the choir at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Edgewater, Maryland. Reta and John eventually retired back to Vermont and lived in St. Johnsbury before John's passing on June 11, 2004, just a few months shy of their 50th wedding anniversary. Reta resided at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehabilitation Center and she was especially thankful for the love and support extended to her by her brother Dale throughout the years. Reta is survived by her daughter, Kathy Isabelle of Kansas City, Missouri; a brother Elmore Paris and his wife Betty of Wilmington, Delaware; a brother Dale Chamberlain and his wife Yolande of St. Johnsbury, Vermont; a brother Donald Chamberlain of Miami, Florida; special friend Ruth Nuremberg of Lyndonville, Vermont and a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom were very special to Reta. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kingdom Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 462, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819 or to the Elizabeth Brown Humane Society, P.O. Box 6, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819. Burial will take place at the Vermont Veteran's Cemetery in Randolph, Vermont. Burial will be at the discretion of the family at a later date.
