Terry K. Rice, longtime Newark farmer, passed away at his home Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at the age of 73. He was born Jan. 27, 1934, in Greenfield, Mass., to Glen and Frances May (Kilburn) Rice. He came to Vermont at the age of 8 and graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1952. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in the Korean Conflict. He married Drusella Gonyaw from Greensboro Bend July 4, 1956. They started farming in Lyndonville in 1957 and, in 1962, moved to Newark where they farmed until retirement in 2004. Together they spent 45 years creating the Rice homestead. All who helped on the farm referred to Terry and Dee as "Mom and Dad." Terry had an active sense of humor and had a nickname for all his children. He had a mind for trivia and American military history, loved football and especially the Dallas Cowboys. Most of all he loved his farm and loved and knew The Lord. He will be greatly missed. A wonderful husband and loving father, he and Dee (427 Maple Ridge Rd., Newark VT 05871) raised six children: Andrew Rice and his wife Alicia of Indiana, Della Bishop and her husband Mike of Lancaster, N.H., Carolyn Darling and her husband Malcolm of South Ryegate, Sandra Wells and her husband Gregory of Essex Junction, JoDee Rice of Pennsylvania, and Deanna Deis and her husband Steven of New York state; five grandchildren: Tammy and Michelle Farnham, Randy and Kevin Brewer, and Morgan Deis; two great-grandchildren Kyra and Maria-Rain; sister Janette Patten of Coventry; his best friend, Jim O'Hop of Newark; two sisters-in-law, Marcelina Smith of Lyndonville and Margaret Smith of Concord; brother-in-law Forrest Degreenia of Cabot. And of course there is his canine buddy named "Hey you!" Graveside services will be held Monday, May 14 at 2 p.m. at the Pleasant St. Cemetery in Newark. Pastor John Tremblay will officiate. Anyone wishing to attend is welcome. The family will receive friends at the Guibord Funeral Home Sunday evening, April 15, from 5-8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to: Pilgrim Manor, Church Street, West Burke, VT 05871; or to their church, United Pentecostal Church, P.O. Box 267, St. Johnsbury Center, VT 05863.
