Etta May Bishop, 81, of Woodsville, N.H., passed away on Aug. 26, 2018 at Cottage Hospital after a two and half year battle with cancer. Etta was born in Lyndonville, Vt., the youngest child of Blanche Gray Bishop and Earl G. Bishop, Sr. She attended Lyndon schools graduating from Lyndon Institute in the Class of 1955 and from Lyndon State College (now Northern Vermont University) in 1959 with a BS in Education. She furthered her studies at the University of Michigan and the University of Connecticut receiving her PhD at UConn. Etta taught 7th and 8th Grade subjects in the Woodsville Elementary School in the early 1960s. She then moved to Connecticut where she was a secondary education teacher in schools there and was director and developer of an eight-year system- wide media/library program in the Canton public school system. She went on to UConn where she was a professor in the Education Dept. and the Assistant Director for Instructional Media and Technology. She also taught classes in the Center for Learning. After 31 years, at her retirement she received the Rheta A Clark award for her work in her profession. As a lifetime member of the Connecticut Media Association she attended many national conventions held in Texas, California, Nevada and other states. She also served on a School Accreditation Team and helping to evaluate schools in the New England States and New York. Etta was a life member of the Lyndon Institute Alumni Association. She received the Outstanding Alumni Award at Lyndon State College and was a member of the Manor Vail Society. A testimonial plaque was presented to her for her 10 years as President of the Freedom Green Condominium Association where she lived in Mansfield Center, Conn. In 2012 she moved back to Woodsville to be near family bringing her nephew, Kenneth Vollmer, whom she cared for 13 years. She was a member of St Luke’s Episcopal Church serving on the Vestry and for a time as treasurer. Etta enjoyed spending time with family and friends also keeping in close touch with those whom she knew in Connecticut. She enjoyed reading and watching the UConn Women’s and Men’s basketball games. She took pride in her home. Etta was always helping others. She was predeceased by her sister, Ethel Vollmer (Craig) and her brother, Earl Bishop, Jr. (Alice). Surviving Etta is her sister, Earlene Young (Edward) of Woodsville, N.H. She is also survived by nieces, Jan Rossier, of Lyndonville, Vt.; Lynn Rhoads (Ted) of Woodsville, N.H.; Korie Kritzky (Dale) of Stafford Springs, Conn.; and nephews , Brian Bishop ( Lara) of Lyndonville, Vt. and Kenneth Vollmer of North Haverhill, N.H. Grand-nieces and grand-nephews surviving her are Jayme Rossier, Zachary and Lucas Zaun, Brianna, Kathleen, and Darien Bishop of Lyndonville, Vt.; Aquinnah Kritzky of Stafford Springs, Conn.; and Melanie Elliott (Camden) of North Haverhill, N.H. Etta is also survived by four great-grand nieces and one great-grandnephew. Among her many friends she leaves behind are her loving St. Luke’s Church family and her Lyndon State classmates who have been very close since college days. There will be no visiting hours. A service for Etta will be held at the convenience of the family.
