Douglas G. Townsend, a lifetime resident of the local area, currently of Sutton, VT, passed away Saturday Morning, August 6, 2016, at his home peacefully, surrounded by his family, at the age of 74. Doug was born in Sutton, VT, on March 8, 1942, son of the late Harry and Laura (Chase) Townsend. He graduated from Lyndon Institute in the Class of 1961, where he achieved the highest grade in Building Trades. He owned and operated Douglas Townsend Building Contractor holding a Master's Electrician and a Plumber and with his excellent carpentry and cabinet making skills allowed him to build 50+ homes and businesses in the local area and many more throughout New England. He was a past Selectman and Chairman for the Town of Lyndon and was very happy to serve his community from 1981-1990. He was President of the local 4-H chapter and former Director of the 4-H Camp in Sharon, VT for many years and received the state 4-H Alumni Recognition Award. Doug enjoyed a great deal of charity work over the years, whether it was plowing driveways or just helping others in times they were most in need. He enjoyed NASCAR and spent a lot of time with his grandchildren, especially when it was sugaring season, which was a favorite time for Doug. Doug is survived by his faithful and very special friend, Sandy Ulmer, of Newark, VT his four children: Scott D. "Scottie" Townsend and wife Darcy of Orlando, FL, Gayle "Bubbie" Townsend-Lang and significant other Tom Donahue of Rutland, VT, Howard L. "Joe" Townsend and wife Janet of Erwin, TN, Tani L. "Funny Face" Rainey and significant other Michael Derosier of St. Johnsbury, VT. Two siblings: Lindsey Townsend of Fairfield, VT, Sylvia Noyes and husband David of Tilton, NJ, his good and close friends, Freddie Kenney, of Waterford, VT and Michael Derosier, of St. Johnsbury, VT Ten grandchildren: Ryan Townsend, Danielle Townsend, Michael Lang, Cassandra Lang, Brian Townsend, Samantha Townsend, Megan Armstrong, Chandler Rainey, James Regione and Sean Regione. 6 great-grandchildren, Ruth Townsend, Christopher Jenkin III, Sophia Lang, Izaic Townsend, Raziel Townsend and Ulysses Townsend and several nieces and nephews. Doug was predeceased by his parents Harry and Laura (Chase) Townsend, Brother Robert Townsend and two children Dean Townsend and Pamela "Punki" Regione and an Aunt Ethel "Auntie" Townsend. Special thanks to Caledonia Home Health Care & Hospice and his nurse Sara. Friends may call on the family from 6-8PM on Thursday, August 11, 2016, at the Guibord Funeral Home, 15 Main Street in Lyndonville, VT. Funeral Services will be held Friday, August 12th at 10AM at Guibord Funeral Home with John Sleeper officiating. Burial will follow at the Sutton Village Cemetery. All are then invited to attend the reception to celebrate Doug's life at the Sutton Free Will Baptist Church. Memorial Donations may be made to Caledonia County 4H, 374 Eerson Falls Road, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819, or Lyndonville Fire Department, 316 Main Street, Lyndonville, VT 05851.
