Arthur B. "Art" Sanborn, of Kirby, died at his home Thursday afternoon Aug. 23, 2012 with his family by his side following a 2-year battle with cancer. He was born March 25, 1945 in St. Johnsbury the son of Paul and Pauline (Pinkham) Sanborn. At the age of 4 Art's grandparents, Paul and Hannah Pinkham of Lyndonville adopted and raised him. Art graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1963 and from Champlain College in 1965 with a degree in Accounting and Business Management, finishing fourth in his class of 256 and first in his Accounting class. In 1992 he completed the Northern New England School of Banking. On Sept. 5, 1963 he married Patricia Moore. Art was a public servant working in several Vermont towns including the city of Burlington where he was the Director of Community and Economic Development in the 1990s. Earlier he had worked for McAuliffe Office Products of Burlington during the 1970s and 80s filling several positions including Vice President and General Manager. He served in the VT House of Representatives from 1984-1988. He also served as the Vice President at Marble Bank in Rutland, Vermont Commissioner of Economic Development, General Manager of Hawk Mountain Resorts, Town Manager of Brandon, Business Manager of Caledonia North Supervisory Union covering seven schools, Municipal Administrator for the town of Lyndon and Village of Lyndonville, and was the Executive Director of the Lamoille Economic Development Corporation until his illness forced his retirement. He was a community minded person who was involved in more than 30 organizations throughout the years. Art served as Chairman and President of several of those including Lyndonville Rotary, Northern VT Development Assoc., Northern VT Resource Conservation, United Way of Rutland, Rutland Downtown Development Corp. and the Rutland Chamber of Commerce. Favorite pastimes included fishing, hunting, traveling to Maine with his family, gardening, woodworking, golfing and following sports. He was an avid Red Sox fan. Art especially enjoyed following his children and grandchildren's educational and Athletic endeavors. Survivors include his wife Patricia Sanborn of Kirby; two children, Kimberly Moore of Rutland and Shane Sanborn of North Carolina; five grandchildren, Brittney, Tyler, Alyssa, Hope and Max; three brothers, Steve Sanborn and wife Patty of Colorado, Gene Sanborn and wife Donna of Kansas and Bill Nadeau and wife Peggy of Connecticut; two sisters, Paula MacKinnon of southern New Hampshire and Kathy Martin and husband John of Florida; 2 great aunts, Norma Touissaint of St. Johnsbury and June Busky of Portland, Maine; nieces, nephews and many cousins; and many close friends including Jay and Carol Kenlan of Rutland, Vt., Leslie Sloan of Pawleys Island, SC, Earl and Donna May of North Concord, Vt., Betty Wehse of Clarendon, Vt., Mark and Mariann Bertolini of Kirby, and Dick and Nancy Lawrence of Lyndon and Tim Soule of St. Albans, Vt. He was predeceased by his parents; his grandparents; and close friends John Wehse, John Sloan and Carl Spangler. A Memorial service will be held in Lyndonville, Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012 at the Lyndonville First Congregation Church with the Rev. Judi Horgan and the Rev. Joan Vincent officiating. Burial in Lyndon Center Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family. Friends may call on the family Friday afternoon Sept. 7 from 4-6 on the Center Street door and exit the Main Street door. at the Guibord Funeral Home.
