James "Jim" Wilbur McHarg, 68, of Sheffield, VT, passed away unexpectedly at his home on August 21, 2017. Jim was born to the late John, Sr. and Elaine (Rexford) McHarg, on June 21, 1949, in East Burke, VT, where he was also raised and educated graduating from Lyndon Institute in 1967. He joined the U.S. Army serving in the Vietnam War until he was wounded and honorably discharged in 1970. After returning to Vermont, Jim spent over 30 years of his career at Burke Mountain Ski Area, a place so familiar to his family roots. He then took a job with the VT Dept. of Travel and Tourism until his retirement in 2014.Jim spent many days hunting and fishing in the Pinkham area, taking long rides on back country roads and visiting yardsales on Saturdays. He had a passion and love for Horse and Pony pulling and attended as many local pulls as he could. You could often find him helping with the horses at his friend's, Dan Houghton, farm, or visiting with many in the community. Jim had a gift for gab and loved to share stories with his family and friends. Jim will be missed by his surviving family: his wife of 14 years, Diane McHarg, of Sheffield, daughter: Sarah (McHarg) & Chico Sanville of Lyndonville, son: Garrett McHarg of Lyndonville, step-daughter: Andrea (Donovan) & Randon Kroeger, grandchildren: Chase and Emma Sanville of Lyndonville, sister: Lori (McHarg) & Douglas Bandy, Sr. of Kirby, in-laws: Glenn and Elaine MacDonald of Lyndonville, as well and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased also by his brother: John McHarg of Kirby, sister: Emily McHarg of Lyndon Corner and Velma McHarg of East Burke, nieces: Tammy Hurlbut & Alyssa McHarg. A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held at 11AM on Friday, August 25, 2017, at the William Dexter Cemetery in Sheffield, VT, with Pastor Steven Clark officiating. There will be no Calling Hours. The family asks that memorial donations be made to the Northeast Kingdom Pulling Association in 2919 Burke Hollow Road, West Burke, VT 05871, marked In Memory of James McHarg.
