AYER: Arthur Morgan , 85, of Derby Line, passed away at the Derby Green Nursing Home in Derby, Tuesday, July 10, 2001. He was born Sept. 27, 1915, in St. Johnsbury, the son of the late Arthur H. and Julia (Morgan) Ayer. He attended St. Johnsbury Academy. He was an outstanding athlete in football, track and field, and held the high school discus and shot put record until 1956. He worked at Cary Maple Sugar Company in St. Johnsbury before moving to a managerial position at American Maple Products in Newport, where he was active in the production and packaging of maple candy. After retiring, he donated time at the rape crisis center and the Chamber of Commerce in Newport. With his woodworking hobby, he left many beautiful heirlooms to the family. He was known far and wide as "The Pied Piper" on CB radio. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Hodge of Castleton, N.Y.; a sister, Arlene Akley of St. Johnsbury; a brother, Neal Ayer of St. Johnsbury; three grandchildren, Ginger Cheney of West Sand Lake, N.Y., and Trevor and Ryan Hodge of New Port Richey, Fla.; and four great-grandchildren. There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 14, at 3:30 p.m., in the Passumpsic Cemetery, with the Rev. John Marshall officiating.
