Doreen E. Fraser passed away at the home of her caregiver the morning of Saturday, March 10, 2018 in Waterford, Vt. Doreen was born Dec. 16, 1922, the daughter of Albert A. and Gertrude (Davis) Fraser of Passumpsic, Vermont. She attended the Passumpsic School and graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in the Class of 1940. After nearly 44 years of employment with Farmers Production Credit and Federal Land Bank Associations of St. Johnsbury, Doreen celebrated her retirement in 1986. She was the consummate career woman who set the benchmark for professional women and was admired and respected by many in her field. Doreen was an active member of the North Congregational Church, having served in many different capacities and was named Deacon Emeritus in 1999. She was also an active member of the St. Johnsbury Woman's Club, a former member of the St. Johnsbury BPW and an RSVP volunteer at the Fairbanks Museum and St. Johnsbury Athenaeum. She was an avid golfer and member of the Johnsbury Country Club, where she scored an extraordinary hole-in-one on the first hole. Decades ago, Doreen became close friends with Janice (Fuller) Currier (formerly of St. Johnsbury and then Danville). Through their friendship, Doreen became a member of the Currier family, always having a place at their table for every holiday and celebration. She usually graced those tables with one of her specialties, be it candied dill spears, Texas sheet cake or her phenomenal carrot cake. Doreen lived a full and interesting life, maintaining many close friendships and generously contributing to her community and numerous charitable foundations. She had a hearty appetite for the arts and cultural events, and was a talented painter herself. When she wasn't traveling or gathering with her quilting group, she could often be found completely absorbed in one of her many books. She shared her wisdom for good living as well as recipes for good eating. She holds a special place in the hearts of many people, and she will be greatly missed. For the past two years Doreen had resided at the home of Martha Nutter in Waterford, where she received the attention and care she needed and deserved. During her time there, she enjoyed reminiscing about her many travels throughout the United States and beyond, looking through pictures of Alaska, Hawaii, Scotland and many of the national parks and landmarks. Doreen was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Helen Lavature. Survivors include cousins, close friends and her "adopted" Currier nieces and nephews and their children. A memorial service and celebration of Doreen's life will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at 2 p.m. at the United Community Church (North). The Rev. Elisa Lucozzi and the Rev. Jay Sprout will be co-officiating. Burial will take place at the Passumpsic Cemetery in the spring.
