STETSON: Dr. John , longtime St. Johnsbury veterinarian, passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning, Oct. 2, 2003, while at his beloved camp on Harvey's Lake. He was born in St. Johnsbury March 9, 1930, the son of Henry and Flora (Barclay) Stetson. A 1948 graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy, he graduated from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. As a professional, John followed in his father's footsteps and began his career as a large animal practitioner administering his services to farm clients throughout Caledonia County. He joined his brother, Dr. Harvey Stetson, at the Stetson Animal Hospital in 1957 and sold the practice in 1994. During winters, the Stetsons resided in Venice, Fla., enjoying the sunshine and golf with his friends. He found great joy in his family and his 11 grandchildren, his camp on Harvey's Lake, and attending West Barnet Presbyterian Church. He was a purist when it came to flyfishing. Dr. Stetson served as a past chairman of the board of trustees at St. Johnsbury Academy; in fact, he was recently reappointed to the board. He was also a longtime member and former chairman of the board at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital. Professionally he served on the executive committees of both the Vermont and New England Veterinary Medical Associations. He served on other civic and business boards and committees too numerous to mention here. He is survived by his wife of nearly 49 years, Doris (Crepeault) Stetson of St. Johnsbury; four children, Deborah Stetson Stiemann and husband Terrence, and their children Elizabeth, Kate, Zachary and Zoe of Grand Rapids, Mich., Scott Stetson and wife Sandy, and their children Demetria and Andrew of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Barclay Stetson and wife Tina, and their children Dylan and Sadie of Waterford, Amy Stetson Rebollo and husband Anthony III, and their children Alexandra, Margaux, and Anthony IV of Columbia, S.C.; a sister-in-law, Bernice Ash and husband Melvin of St. Johnsbury; and a brother-in-law, Robert Crepeault and wife Sandra of East St. Johnsbury. He was predeceased by brothers Harvey Stetson DVM, and Paul Stetson; and two sisters, Jane Herthum and Mary Farnham. The family will receive friends at the Sayles Funeral Home Monday evening, Oct. 6, from 5-8 p.m. Plans for a memorial service are undecided at this time. Please omit flowers. Memorial contributions may be directed to either St. Johnsbury Academy, 1000 Main St., St. Johnsbury VT 05819; or to Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital, P.O. Box 905, St. Johnsbury VT 05819.
