Swanton - It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Edgar Joseph "Ed" Royer. Ed was born on December 30, 1925, in St. Johnsbury, VT to the late L. Arthur Royer and Rose Fournier Royer. He graduated from St. Johnsbury Trade School, class of 1945 where he played varsity football and ice hockey. After attending Wentworth Institute in Boston, he started working at Bell Aircraft in Burlington where he joined the Air National Guard in 1947. On May 19th, 1951, he married Jeanne Brouillette. They met at Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) where Ed and Jeanne were both employed and where Ed began his career as a Tool & Die Maker Specialist. While working at UCC he was activated in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict where he maintained the P 51 Fighter Air Crafts. Ed retired as an accomplished Plant Engineer from UCC in 1986, and then began his new career of helping others! Ed was a father and husband to a wonderful family. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, boater, cook, sugar maker and could fix anything. He was a man of few words and lots of wisdom. He was a great storyteller and always had a good joke. Ed enjoyed spending winters in Florida, but enjoyed coming home more. He couldn't wait to plant his garden, join the "boys" at morning coffee and catching up on the UCC news on Friday nights. Ed and Jeanne enjoyed traveling the country and beyond, especially visiting their children wherever they lived. Along with his wife Jeanne of 62 years, Ed is survived by his 4 children; Carmen (Kendrick) Riggs of Louisville, KY, Dr. James Royer of Portsmouth, RI, Paula Royer of Louisville , KY, and Judy Smith of St. Albans. Ed and Jeanne were blessed with 8 grandchildren; Jennifer (Wesley) Tucker, Andrea (Alex) Dulude, Bridget and Philip Royer, Dylan and Katherine Riggs, Bryan (Emilie) Smith and Hilary Smith. 5 great grandchildren; Morgan and Dharma Dulude, Hannah and Violet Hisman, and Marilynn Jeanne Tucker just born 8/13/13. Ed is also survived by one brother, Ernest (Christine) Royer of Barefoot Bay FL, and 3 sisters, Marielle Shepard of Irasburg, VT, Cecile Albiser and Georgette Willkins of St. Johnsbury, VT. He was predeceased by his sister Gilberta Royer. He leaves many nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers in-law. Ed took great pleasure in volunteering for various organizations in the community. He was a past Exalted Ruler for the Elks, Member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers , Boys State Chairman for the American Legion Green, Mtn. Post #1, Active member of the Carbide Retirees Corp., Chairman of VEA State Scholarship Program , Chairman of the Vocational/Educational Advisory Board for the NW State Correctional Facility, member of the ELKs Silver Towers Charity Committee, active member of the American Legion Honor Guard, past Director for Franklin County Field Days, and a volunteer for NMC, Meals on Wheels, and many others. The family wishes to thank Leon Begnoche and the Swanton Police Department, the Swanton EMS, and a special thanks to Rett Heald, a close friend of Ed's, and the Heald Funeral Home for their excellent care and guidance. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Monday, August 19, 2013, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Heald Funeral home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 20th, at 11:00 AM at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 246 Lake Street, St. Albans. The Reverend Maurice J. Roy will be the celebrant. Interment with military honors will be held at 3:30 PM at the family lot in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Sheldon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Silver Towers Camp for Exceptional Children, c/o St. Albans Lodge 1566, B.P.O.E., St. Albans, VT 05478 or the Northwestern Medical Center Auxiliary, 133 Fairfield Street, St. Albans, VT 05478.
