Richard Arthur Wright , 79, Littleton, N.H., passed away on March 21, 2007, at his home on Patriots Drive after a brief illness. He was the son of Arthur S. and Alice (Wilkinson) Wright of St. Johnsbury, Vt. Richard attended St. Johnsbury schools where he was acknowledged as an outstanding athlete, notably as the state record setting halfback for St. Johnsbury Academy. He graduated from the Academy in 1948 and served in the U.S.A.A.F for four years, having enlisted on Sept. 11, 1950. After being stationed in El Paso, Texas, for two years, he was sent to England as a welder and was stationed in Mildenhall. While in England, he met and married Eileen (Webb) Wright of Roydon, England, whom he adored dearly. Upon discharge, the couple moved to the St. Johnsbury area, eventually relocating to Littleton in 1958 where they built the family home on Patriots Drive. He was a lifetime member of the Littleton Elks Lodge. Richard worked as an area salesman for the Fuller Brush Company for 35 years, briefly serving as the area sales manager in Pittsfield, Mass. He covered north to Groveton and south to the Lincoln/Woodstock region. He was known to many long term residents of the North County and thoroughly enjoyed the customers and friends he met through his work. From 1979 until his retirement in 1990, Richard was employed as a nighttime security guard at the Littleton Regional Hospital. He enjoyed working with the emergency room staff and was considered a kind, selfless man that spent many a night counseling someone in need. In retirement, both he and his wife enjoyed traveling, playing cribbage and spending time with family. Summers were spent at his beloved cottage on Forest Lake, which became a focal point of family gatherings. He was exceptionally proud of his children and grandchildren and never hesitated to express his love for them. He had a natural gift for meeting new people and genuinely enjoyed learning as much as he could about their lives. He was loved and admired by his friends and family and will forever be remembered as both a steadfast man with an infectious sense of humor and as a pillar of strength. He is greatly missed. He was predeceased by his parents and grandson Erik Richard Wright of Littleton. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Eileen A.; five sons and a daughter: Nigel G. Wright and wife Cindy of Littleton, Dayle R. Wright and wife Leeann of Burlington, Vt., Michael T. Wright of Eliot, Maine, Neal A. Wright of Littleton, Daniel A. Wright and wife, Valerie of Gilman, Vt., and Deborah A. (Wright) Johnson and husband Mathew of Framingham, Mass.; a sister, Loraine (Wright) Mumford of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; and seven grandchildren, a nephew and a niece. A celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, March 31, at 3 p.m., at the Littleton Congregational Church, with the Rev. Edward Lopeman officiating.
