Elaine M. (Locklin) Petty died peacefully early Tuesday morning, Feb. 15, 2005, at her home in Lyndonville, Vt., with her family at her side, at the age of 63. She was born Jan. 19, 1942, in Portsmouth, N.H., a daughter of the late Leo J. and Virginia C. (Botham) Locklin. She attended St. Johnsbury Academy and finished her schooling in Holyoke, Mass. She later married Paul A. Petty Sr. He predeceased her in 1978. In the mid-1980s Elaine moved back to Vermont. In 1996 her family opened the PettyCo Jct. Country Store in St. Johnsbury. She worked there for many years and enjoyed meeting and helping people and working with her family. Elaine was a member of the Women of the Moose Club Chapter 1021 of St. Johnsbury, and the MacLachlan Society of Scotland. She enjoyed bingo, picking wild flowers during the summer months, and being friendly and helpful to all people, as well as spending time with her family. Survivors include her best friend and companion of 26 years, James Buck of Lyndonville; six children, Paul A. Petty Jr. and his wife Susan of Milton, Vt., Pamela J. Petty and her husband James Rust and their children Mariah and Jimmy Rust of 12 Vt. Rte. 18, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819, Ronald Buck and his wife Tammy of Springfield, Mass., Angela Byrne and her husband Richard of Woodsville, N.H., Kristine Connaughton and her husband Douglas of Springfield, Mass., and Keri Venancio and her husband Michael of Ludlow, Mass.; 14 other grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Duane (Bucky) Locklin and his wife Sandra of St. Johnsbury Center, Vt.; five sisters, Shirley Bennett and her husband Red of Lynn, Mass., Alice Bean of Lyndonville, Irene Smith and her husband Murdo of Lyndonville, Carol Ann Bowles of Lyndonville, and Anita Zentz and her husband Dale of Virginia; two sisters-in-law, Betty Maynard and her husband Frederick of St. Johnsbury, and Marlene Rock of St. Johnsbury Center; and nieces, nephews and her PettyCo Jct. family. She was also predeceased by her sister-in-law, Joann Nichols, just one week ago; and a brother-in-law, Harry Petty Jr. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 19, at 1 p.m., at the funeral home, with the Rev. Joan Vincent officiating. Spring burial will be in the St. Johnsbury Center Cemetery. Friends may call on the family this Friday evening, Feb. 18, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
