Joseph N. Duguay , beloved son of Maurice and Geraldine (Gracie) Duguay, of St. Johnsbury died Thursday, July 9, 2009, at the age of 60. He was born in St. Johnsbury on July 28, 1948. He graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1966 and the University of Vermont in 1970. He lived for over 30 years in Burlington and worked during that time at Tortilla Flats, the Rotisserie, and Burlington Electric. After retirement from Burlington Electric, he returned to the St. Johnsbury area and worked at Aubuchon Hardware. He is survived by his mother Geraldine of St. Johnsbury; four sisters, Nancy Duguay and husband Richard Swanson of Williston, Mary Profetto of Alabama, Theresa Duguay of St. Johnsbury, and Anita Reak and husband Brian of Milton; uncles and aunts, Richard Gracie, Susan Dugan, Pauline Collins, and Patricia Rutherford; several cousins including Steven Gracie, who was like a brother to him; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; close family friends Michele Laberge and Bruno Ravel; and longtime friend Rick Long. He was predeceased by his father, Maurice Duguay, on Nov. 9, 2001. Joe was a man of many interests. Widely read, he enjoyed philosophical discussions. His great love of the outdoors was developed as a child when he spent many happy hours fishing and hunting with his father, activities he continued into his adult life. Joe felt a strong spiritual connection to the outdoors. He especially enjoyed hiking and camping in Victory Bog. He was looking forward to hiking the Grand Canyon with his brother-in-law Dick. Joe also enjoyed running. A talented guitar player, he loved music and shared that love of music with his nephews and nieces, teaching some of them to play guitar and taking others to their first rock concerts. He also played for many years in a band with some of his friends in the Burlington area. On Tuesday, July 14, at 11 a.m., a committal service will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery on St. John's Street. Immediately following, a celebration of Joe's life will be held next to the cemetery, outside at the family home, 30 Centerview Terrace, St. Johnsbury. Anyone wishing to attend is welcome. Joe was involved with the Special Olympics as a volunteer for many years. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Joe's name to Special Olympics of Vermont, 368 Ave D, Suite 30, Williston, VT 05495.
