William Edward Hoar, 75, of West Main Street in Barnet, Vt. passed away on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at Welcome Home in Lyndonville. Vt. Bill was born in St. Johnsbury on July 2, 1943 to Edward and Marion (Murphy) Hoar. He graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1961 and went on to receive an Associate's Degree in Business from Champlain College. In 1968, Bill married Ila Merle Sidney. They shared 51 years together. Bill worked as Town Clerk and Treasurer in Barnet for 39 years. When Bill retired in 2009, to show their respect and admiration for his dedication to the town, the Town of Barnet re-named the town hall building the William E Hoar Municipal Building. Bill was also recognized in 2009 by the State of Vermont with the Vermont Secretary of State Enduring Democracy Award. Bill loved gardening and sports, especially golf. Bill was a member of the St. Johnsbury Country Club for over 30 years. He was a Patriots and Red Sox fan, and held UVM basketball season tickets for years. He loved watching his grandchildren play sports. He took great pride in his garden and received numerous compliments over the years for his garden. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 51 years: Ila Hoar of Barnet; his son: Sean Hoar and partner, Karen Lafreniere, of Graniteville, VT; his daughter: Kelly Greaves and husband, Paul, of Walden, VT; three sisters: Beverly Merritt of Rutland, VT, Betty McCarthy of Ocala, FL, and Marilyn Bixby, of Shelburne, VT; two grandchildren: Brenden Greaves of St. Johnsbury, VT and Pamela Sweet and husband, Jason, of Danville, VT; one great-grandchild: Daniel Sweet; and many nieces and nephews. There will be a graveside service in the spring at West Barnet Cemetery. Charitable donations can be made in Bill's name to The Bluefield Project to Cure Frontotemporal Dementia, 637 Carolina Street, San Francisco, CA 94107
