Catherine E.(Weldon) Dyer, 94, of St. Johnsbury died peacefully at her residence with her children by her side early Monday afternoon, April 12, 2004, after a week's illness. Mrs. Dyer was born in Attleboro, Massachusetts, on June 26, 1909, the daughter of Charles and Annie C. (Blakney) Weldon. She married Daniel Dyeron July 22, 1933, and they had 68 wonderful years together, many of those years residing on Clay Hill. He died July 24, 2001. She received a bachelor of arts in French and Spanish from Boston University in 1930 and was awarded with membership into Phi Beta Kappa. She did her graduate work in library science at the University of Vermont. She was an assistant school librarian at St. Johnsbury Academy from 1968 to 1981. Previously she had served as district secretary for the Essex-Caledonia school district. She began her teaching career in 1931 at Craftsbury Academy as a foreign language teacher. She was a longtime trustee of the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum and served as a docent for the art gallery there. She was affiliated with Gamma Phi Beta sorority, the St. Johnsbury College Club, Conversation Circle, Caledonia-South Essex Retired Teachers Association, and the St. Johnsbury chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons. Politically she was very anti-war and a staunch supporter of women's and minorities' rights. Music and books enriched her life right up through her last few days. The piano was a lifelong companion, and she played for productions throughout her life, from the days of playing for silent movies up through several Academy musical productions. She was also able to play by ear. Her musical talent seems to be especially passed on to the generation of her great-grandchildren. She is survived by one son, Barry James Dyer, and his wife, Kay (Coburn), of Sun City Center, Florida; by one daughter, Clare Louise Dyer, of Clearwater, Florida; by daughter-in-law Merrie Ellen (Sanborn) Dyerof Cazenovia, New York; by seven grandchildren: Margaret Moore Dyer, Daniel Coburn Dyer, Laura Allendorf Fenninger and her husband, Randy, Jeanne Allendorf Alexander and her husband, Peter, Grant Michael Allendorf and his wife, Susan, Thomas Brian Dyer and his wife, Kristi, and Jason Streeter Dyer; by six great-grandchildren: Ryan and Danielle Allendorf, John and Thomas Fenninger, and Catherine and Elizabeth Alexander; and by one nephew, Douglas Welden, and his wife, Jane, and their daughters Joan and Katie of Attleboro, Massachusetts. Amongst many dear friends was a special friend of she and her husband, Frank B. Easton Jr. of Corinth. She was predeceased by her son Brian in 1987; and by her only brother, Roland Weldon, and his wife, Agnes. With a family get-together already planned on the weekend of her birthday, memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, June 26, at 2 p.m., at Sayles Funeral Home in St. Johnsbury. Refreshments will follow at the St. Johnsbury House immediately after the memorial service.
