BREWSTER - Joseph G. Silipo Jr., 80, of Brewster died peacefully at his home on December 26, 2012, after living with cancer for several months. Born in Scituate, MA, on January 20, 1932, he was the son of the late Joseph G. Silipo Sr. and the late Nancy (LaCona) Fanizzi. His father died when he was 18 months old. When he was a child, his mother married Moses Fanizzi and the family moved from Kilby Street in Hingham to Brockton. He was stationed in Korea, serving in the Army during the Korean War. He graduated in 1954 from Stonehill College in Easton where he majored in Philosophy and History. Following college he taught school at St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont where he was also a housemaster. He left teaching to go into business, following the advice of his brother Louis and entered the field of Cosmetology. After working with his brother for a few years, he opened his own business, which he started at his home in Rockland, MA in the early '60s. The business continued to grow and in the early '70s, he moved it to a separate larger location in Rockland, and named it Jason's. He operated that facility until 1979 when he began teaching Cosmetology at Cape Cod Tech in Harwich. In 1985 he received his M.Ed. degree from Westfield State College. For the past 35 summer seasons he has worked as office manager at Coastal Acres Campground in Province town. He first retired from teaching in the late '90s and was asked to return and "rescue" the cosmetology department in the early 2000s. He rebuilt the department and officially retired three years later. He lived his life to the full and was grateful for the opportunities that he had. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Spain and Italy. He was fluent in Spanish and Italian and had many friends in both countries. His dream was to retire and live part time in Europe. He will be remembered for the positive influence he was for so many individuals he had met throughout his life. He is survived by his brother Richard Fanizzi of Rockland, his nieces Diane St. Laurent of Hingham, Annette Barrett of Sutton, VT, Rose Marie Yodzio of Hingham and Nancy O'Connell of East Bridgewater; his nephews Michael Fanizzi of Norwood, Paul Fanizzi of Provincetown and Joseph Fanizzi of Myrtle Beach, SC. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Peter the Apostle Church, 11 Prince St., Provincetown on Thursday, January 3, 2013, at 10 a.m. Visiting hours are Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the Gately Funeral Home, 94 Harry Kemp Way, Provincetown. If desired, memorial contributions in honor of Joe may be made to the Visiting Nurses of Cape Cod (Hospice), 434 Route 134, Suite D-3, South Dennis, MA 02660 or to Cape Cod Regional Technical High School Cosmetology department, marked for the attention of Mrs. Catherine LeBlanc, 351 Pleasant Lake Ave., Harwich, MA 02645; to be used specifically to benefit students in that program.
